G20 officials, ministers, and multilateral organizations have consistently supported the health agenda outlined by India’s G20 presidency, headed by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing innovation and universal access to health services and affordable. This has led to the consensus that global collaborative efforts are crucial for prevention, preparation and resolving health crises.
The most important global health initiatives include the creation of an international digital health initiative that will unite the efforts of all health professionals worldwide and to create an equitable countermeasure for medical platform, traditional medical wisdom for the future of health as well as climate and health-related priorities.
Empowerment Through Digital Health
Digital health is emerging as a key factor in universal health healthcare. India’s experiences using platforms such as Co-Win as well as e-Sanjeevani during the outbreak highlighted the potential of digital tools for health care delivery. A national health digital ecosystem, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission allows patients to keep and share their medical records to ensure optimal care and is a vital element of India’s health digital ecosystem, which has brought all-inclusive healthcare coverage for 1.4 billion Indians.
While many countries embrace digital health, the fragmentation of information is a problem. This WHO-led Global Initiative on Digital Health tackles this issue. The initiative aims to bring nations on a single digital health platform and promote the use of high-quality technology, privacy and cross-country education.
A Call for Medical Countermeasure Platform
Global vaccine disparities must be addressed immediately. Although advances in health care have made it possible to stop spreading covid. Covid disease, UNDP data reveal that up to 73% of people living in high-income countries have received at least one dose of a vaccine, compared with 36% of those in low-income countries at the time of August 2023. We must work as a group to design the guidelines and a global framework to ensure equal access to diagnostics, vaccines and treatments. The platform must be inclusive, effective and agile. It should also be accountable for providing quick availability of affordable solutions to health problems. The agreement to have an international consultation led by the WHO through G20 provides an interim solution for immediate implementation, encouraging preparation for future emergencies. The global medical countermeasures mechanism is currently in the process of being finalized within the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body process, that is expected to end in the month of May 2024.
Resurrecting Traditional Medicine
A majority of the population worldwide uses traditional medical practices. About 40% of the licensed pharmaceuticals are derived from natural sources. For example, the development of aspirin relied on traditional herbal recipes using willow tree bark as well as child cancer treatments that were influenced by the beautiful periwinkle. The WHO-Global Centre for Traditional Medicine acts as an example of this dedication to the role of evidence-based traditional and complementary therapies in the promotion of health. As a pioneering organization in the field, the G20 takes on the responsibility of revitalizing ancient wisdom and revealing the potential benefits of these time-honored practices to benefit humanity on a global scale.
Elevating Climate and Health Priorities
While the world is coming together to deal with the effects of global warming the effects of climate change are expected to result in 250,000 deaths per year between 2030 between 2030 and 2050 from malnutrition and malaria, diarrhea and heat-related stress in the words of WHO. Recognizing the intricate links between health and climate as a whole, the G20 is seeking out solutions that are prioritized. The commitment to low-carbon and resilient health systems will integrate the health sector with larger sustainability goals. Combating antimicrobial resistance with the One Health approach further exemplifies the global health pledge of the G20.
The G20’s path to averting the pandemic focuses on the meaning of an old phrase, “Good health is the greatest fortune, serving as the foundation for overall prosperity.”
The call to action resonates in a loud way as G20 nations unite to transform the health environment.
